Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! Today was the last episode of Doctor Who Season 10! Oh man and here are my thoughts!
Disclaimer: This review is bbased on observations and opinions of the lead writer! Please respect her thoughts and opinions! Spoilers ahead too!
Oh man! Oh man! This season was the strongest season for Capaldi because last season was weak! I didn’t do a review on it because I missed two episodes and didn’t pay attention to it as much as I did with this one and Season 8 along with the Christmas specials! I was bummed after seeing Clara resurrected when we all know that companions die and they tend to die epic deaths and hardly come back. Nope! Even though this was a death that led to him meeting with river again in the second Christmas special and that was when they took a year off before the next one including a new season. I think taking that year to make the new season was a good idea. I know it threw off a season each year but after the last season…yeah it needed work and glad it was worked on, especially when the news dropped about Peter Jackson being in for an episode or two. When I heard about it, I was like, “Okay! Dude who did the Lord of the Rings movies is joining the team! This will be interesting!”
So, the Doctor is a university professor in this one teaching Physics and does make sense since time travel does have to rely on Physics and then we see the new companion, Bill Potts, walk in to listen to his lectures and after the first meeting things start going weird. Such as seeing puddles coming alive to having a house killing your roommates after moving in and of course the adventures to Mars to meet a classic Who creature and meeting GRman soldiers and ancient Celts who are afraid of a demon that they had to fight for all time.
Nerdy Shirts explained that Bill was a call back to one of the classic doctors but I did like her as a companion. Too bad she was only in for this season since most companions are around for one or two. Her character shown her to be inquisitive and asking about the many creatures that they encountered and of course does get into trouble in some points, especially when the Monks appeared in this season where it does show how she really cares for the Doctor despite being a lesbian. Yes, she makes it clear in one episode she doesn’t like men. I’m cool with it and it made it different from the Clara and Danny story from season 8. I did like in the last Christmas special that she was hinted as a doll that the kid had at the end. The ending for for Bill, in my book, was better than Clara’s actually even though it dealt with the Cybermen again in the end of this season but better in a way. Gondras and I were surprised that she was turned into one which GOndras did say, “Now they are turning everyone into one?” Which he talked about Season 8’s ending where the Brigadeer and Danny were turned into them but I would say how they did it this time was calling back to the classic design according to Gondras. I haven’t really seen enough classic Who but he has told me enough about it that which brings me to…
One of the episodes featured another classic creature from Doctor Who and it’s the Martian Men who are lizard creatures that sound human but have more of a growl to their voice. The episode has the Doctor go to Mars and meet British soldiers that have saved one of these creatures and he assimilated himself to them until the Martian Queen comes alive. Apparently, they were dormant and appeared to be extinct even though there was an episode of Smith where a Martian Man was in a submarine with him Rowry and Amy. I do find it interesting how they put a piece of British history on Mars as a way of them colonizing it and made it seem more “dead.” Hmmm, foreshadowing much Doctor Who with humans colonizing Mars?
The Return of Missy: We did get to see Missy again in this season since she did show up at the start of Season 9 and was only around for two episodes dealing with Davras and the Dahlics. In this one was a bit more interesting because she ends up in a vault inside the Tardus. Even though the Doctor wants to be friends again with Missy but you know how she always like to turn her back due to her Master side and yes it is cute how they work with each other until the season finale when we get to meet a Master from the past! The one that appeared in the tenth’s run! Oh yes! Double the Master, Double the fun! You never thought that would happen especially with how he asks Missy about becoming a woman which when Missy first appeared in Season 8, I wasn’t expecting her to be the Master but they did play it low. I wonder what will happen next with the Master now since it looked like the old and Missy vanished in the finale but it was fun seeing a female version of the Master!
Regeneration? Throughout this season, it felt like we were almost seeing the end of Capaldi’s doctor since this was his last season. At first in some of the last few episodes it felt like he was going to sacrifice himself. But the non-human companion with Bill and the Doctor was worrying about him as well in how he was acting reckless throughout the episodes. I can see how he was really reckless especially the space episode where the satellite was acting like a business in space where he ends up blind after handing Bill his helmet. I did like that tidnbi and would’ve love to see more episodes with that since that could be a weakness that Missy could play with or any other villain but nope, Bill did help get his sight back all thanks to the Monks. It felt too quick but would be a great story unless it was told as a story in a book.
Do we get to meet the next version? Well…I would say wait until the Christmas special if you haven’t caught this one, I would download it from ITunes if you can. I can’t wait what will happen during the Christmas special since Gondras did do a text message description for me that the next doctor looks like William Hartnell and we will see how that will take place during the special. Besides Holiday Matsuri, can’t wait for Christmas!
Rating: 5 Out of 5 Star Pawprints: Yes! I give this one a five because it was stronger than the last season! They did have a good choice in using Peter Jackson during this season but saved him towards the end from what we have seen. I did like Bill and too bad this was her only season. I can’t wait what to see with the next doctor once the new season happens probably next year. Hoping so or take another year off since it did help develop the story a lot better and make it strong!
Well, that is it for this review! I decided to base it on thoughts alone since that would be easier! Let’s see if Season 11 will be strong whenever it comes back on BBC!
