Technology: How to Make An Accessible Convention Schedule

Hello to all of my beautiful nerds traveling the vast universe! I am back with something completely different!

Creating a Simple and Accessible Convention Schedule!

As a blind person myself, it’s sometimes hard to read a convention guide with or without the accessible apps. Ever since last year, I have been creating my own Convention Schedules through using Google Sheets which makes it easier on myself, even if we have a press pass or not. I did have the Word Document version of the NFB Convention Schedule but wishing I had done that spreadsheet because it was a little tedious going through all the different pages in the entire guide. If I were to go to future NFB related events I will definitely do that. I bet you’re wondering, how am I able to get access to that document? Well, with the technology we have today there are different apps we can use in order to read documents and of course with how Apple has the Files app in order to access the Pages and Numbers apps to read things alongside Google having Drive and I did review the Polaris and how Drive can be used. So, here is how I make my Convention Schedule:

What You Need: Either a Tablet or a PC in order to access a spreadsheet program and either One Drive, Drop Box, Google Drive, and other File Sharing apps. If you have one, a Braille Device with Android Tech or you can just save it to a Thumb Drive.

1. Look at the convention schedule for the one you’re going to. Conventions tend to have a short list of events and then add onto it, which to keep the document ready in order to access again to add onto it.
2. Next, on whatever spreadsheet app or program, at the top of the columns, title them “Day,” “Panel Room,” “Time,” “Panel/Event Name” or what name you want it to be. You can also do a Notes column where you can write in what you want to have your friends do if they are on your press team or if you don’t have a press pass but want video for a YouTube Channel you like to put your convention videos on, you can also mention video or pictures. Also, if it’s a meet up, just mention that.
3. Next, this will get a little technical and that is merging cells to create blocks. This will help separate the days from each other, even the panel rooms where each event would be and their times. Such as this event will take place on Friday, in the same room as another but at a different time. So, in the Day Column from the day you type in do a Shift+Down Arrow and count each cell you may need to add the events, like if you want to go to four events end it at that by going home or heading back to your hotel room for the rest of the day which you would count three cells from Friday and it would select those blocks as you go. Next, there are times where certain apps give you the Alignment Box which gives you the options that gives options on how you want your text and cells be formatted. If you’re using Excel on a computer, you use the Applications Key and then up arrow to “Format Cells” and it will give you a box with tabs, which you can switch with either using Ctrl+Tab but now you can easily use Ctrl+Page Up or Down and just do that until you hear Alignment.
A. In order to get to the Merge Cells option in the Alignment area is by swiping on your device until you hear “Merge Cells” and sometimes depending on the device it will say, “Off” so double tap and it will turn on. Once you go back to the cells in your spreadsheet by either swiping or using a keyboard if you have one, it will say, “A2 to A4” Merged Cells!”
B. With Excel on a computer, once in the Alignment, you tab over to “Merge Cells” and hit the enter key on that option. And it will say the same message as if it was done on your tablet.
4. Once you have all of the events you want and added into the spreadsheet for the entire weekend, there are many things you can do with it:
A. For the Braille Device user, for the Polaris since I use that, best way of being able to view this document is by a PDF. First, go into Docs on your Polaris and go to the apps area and you can either access Docs or Drive and whatever account it’s saved under make sure you’re on that account. Next, either first letter navigate or tab, F3, to go to the spreadsheet it’s titled as and then use one of the scroll keys to go down and hear “More Options for this File.” Hit enter or Dot eight and then tab to where it says, “Send a Copy.” This will give you the option to save as a PDF, hit Enter once you tab over to it and tab over to the OK button and it will give you the options of apps to send to or save to and I choose Drive where once it’s entered on that, it will give you the OK button to send it over. Once that’s done. Go to Drive and it will give you all your documents you have saved through the different Google apps, find that file you saved as a PDF and once you tab to More Options, hit Enter again and then tab down to Download. And it will download to the Downloads folder in the File Manager. When you open that file from Downloads, all your information you have entered will be there. You can also save it as an Excel format, if you haven’t used Excel Viewer which I had to look up, there are commands to use in order to view your information. I find the PDF view easier since all my information is aligned.
B. For anyone who doesn’t have the Android specs, you can save the information to a thumb drive and save the file to your device by cutting or copying the file to your clipboard and paste it into your documents folder and open it from there to view it. If your device has the Excel Viewer like mine, I think the U2 had it f I remembered, you can find the navigation keys in the Help Menu.
C. If you have Numbers, even though it has changed with IOS 12, or have Sheets as well, you can use the Bluetooth capabilities with your Apple device in order to navigate a spreadsheet if it’s saved as one or copy down the schedule into the Pages app as an easier alternative to using a spreadsheet app. And of course with I Cloud on your device, you can save the many spreadsheets as different formats and send it to Drive if you prefer it that way and download it from Drive on your Polaris, you an also do it that way.
Well, that is it for this post. I know it was really technical in a way and tried to make it as simple as I could. The possibilities are endless when it comes to creating this schedule, whether it’s through using Excel on your computer and saving it to a thumb drive or just doing it through Google or Apple, you can create something that can help you get to your events during a big weekend. I will be using this idea with Ranger Stop this weekend and will give you an update in the Convention Spotlight in how it worked. I will take a look into what happened with Numbers and may make a post about that since I noticed some changes since IOS 12 has released. Stay tuned for that and anything else! Until then, stay beautiful while traveling the universe!

Panels: From Attendee to Author: The BLind Perspective from Omni Fandom Expo 2018

Love Found In Cinders: A Backwards Fairy TaleHello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! It’s time to bring you another Omni Expo Video!

From Attendee to Author: The Blind Perspective!

So, it’s time for my panel! This was right after Josh Seth’s panel during Omni that Saturday. Don’t worry we will get it up since it has to go through edits but in the meantime you get this one.

Nerdy Shirts thought it would be a good idea to do a panel about my writing and put “Blind Perspective’ in its name since it is the name of my first book. I created this panel to not only talk about myself but also give tips on starting a blog and writing a book. Even though this is my first time presenting this panel and was a little nervous but hey it is a good step in the right direction which I also filled out a form for Holiday Matsuri and hoping to host it at that this year.

About attendees….like last year not many and Gondras had to play the audience again. Not sure if it is due to what slots I picked but this time it fell upon the costume contest’s slot. Wait, one person did come in and leave. I am not sure if I will host another panel next year but if you think I should keep going then please comment down below.

What is next for Nerdy Shique Universe? Well, Josh Seth’s panel is next since it is the best one saved for last! Also, trying to get the video together and that is something we wanted to do since Holiday Matsuri and that is a Skype interview with J Michael Tatum and and Brandon McInnis! Once that happens, follow us on Twitter @ Nerdy Shique for the updates! And also, I will be linking you guys to my books, The Blind Perspective and Love Found in Cinders, so you can The Blind Perspective: Convention Stories From the Darkcheck them out and purchase them as EBooks! You can also find them as individual pages on this blog up above! Enjoy!

Panels: Writing Heroes from Omni Fandom Expo 2018!

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! I am back with another video from Omni Fandom Expo 2018!

Writing Heroes Friday Panel!

Sorry for not being on here this past week, I’ve been studying for my JAWS Certification exam so I can go further down my path of Assistive Tech and I do have an announcement towards the end.

So, this panel is a writing advice panel known as Writing Heroes which caught Gondras and my ears because around this time I was a bit in a rut with my third book. I had a hard time writing it because I felt like it was not flowing as much and this panel did help me in a way and that is with back story.

Even though GOndras felt a little bit put down for what he said about writing someone’s back story was sad but I liked what was said and now that I have my story back on track I know where to keep going. And not only that my buddies Mimi Jean Pamfiloff and Kaz LaFave did give me inspiration to keep going. Don’t worry, they will be mentioned towards the end of my third book.

I would say you don’t always have to follow every tip in this video to a “T” since this is about writing your characters and you can write the hero anyway you want since like how Mimi put it, “It’s your story! Do whatever you want!” These young ladies also had a villain’s panel which will be after my newest book review! So, you can follow these tips or just do what you want!

Announcement: Now it’s time to announce that I was offered the Assistive Technology Instructor job in Daytona Beach! Yay! If you remembered, I did mention that I did a work experience at the rehab center and not having much experience teaching did notice that I need to work on things before I come back to it. I did and went to volunteer in my school district, went to Apple workshops to get better handles on apps and advanced learning, and even learned Android, and now I have a new Braille note taker the Braille Sense Polaris! So, back in February I re-applied for the position since one of my friends out there I knew for a long time sent me the link since they were looking for a new instructor and applied to see what would happen, I did get the interview in April and was told a week or so later that someone else was chosen. I know it sounds weird but then Tuesday comes around and I get a call and it was the person who gave me the experience and I did ask her for a recommendation letter for the school I was applying to for my grad certificate and she offered me the job. Yes, I took it because this was something I wanted for a long time and I know I may be a bit rusty but I did help people learn new apps, I did say I got my Customer Service Training Instructor to download Soundscape and she loved it! I did also suggest it to use it on paratransit if you’re lost this morning at the NFB meeting. I was really excited that I got offered this and yes I will be moving to Daytona. Don’t worry, this will keep going because Nerdy Shique Universe was the blog that started everything for me. As in, being able to get on Word Press, start the YouTube Channel, even getting to so many conventions and writing about so many things from hauls, to anime, cosplay, and even getting to interview so many people like Brian Beacock, Lauren Landa, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, and even now Derek Steven Prince for that entire hour. I don’t want this to end ever because it was also something that led me to writing my two books and onto my third. I may be posting less but I will make sure you guys will get the content, I will go back to Orlando for conventions when the press opportunities get approved, I mean did fill out Anime Festival Orlando’s form to see if I can extend the olive branch again because time has passed and hoping things look up. And of course, this will bring new technology experiences for me because the world of assistive tech is expanding ever since 2018 started, I mean Microsoft just created a controller for one-handed gamers. I guess you are also wondering, will I still do Soundscape at Florida Mall, I will have to see because I want to do that experiment and see how well it works. If I knew about it in March, I would’ve had it then but now that I know it exists I will test it.

So, anyways, I’m glad for this new opportunity and right now just waiting on the paperwork to go through and thinking about apartments, which that is another thing! I will be living on my own until Gondras graduates. He is supportive because he knew my struggles in finding a job the past three years and it’s hard having a cane in hand being interviewed for a position because we are the largest unemployed group at the moment and it’s heartbreaking. It did take me some time but the patience shown it and I’m glad that 2018 so far has been my year and I’m still trucking! Now that I got that career rolling that means getting back to school is another part to complete.

That’s it for this post! Stay tuned for the next panel video from Omni Fandom Expo 2018! I’m sorry for it taking so long but things got in the way and we’re catching up so got more things to get up! Until next time!

Shopping: Holiday Gift Guide 2017!

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! It is November and we are getting closer to Christmas and you know what that means! It is time for a gift guide here. I have done gift giving advice here and back on Myspace when it was a thing and now it is time for a gift guide in case if you need some ideas!

MakeUp Sets: First is makeup sets! We all know the beauty lovers in our lives and getting that perfect makeup gift would help. We do have the beginners and experts that we know when it comes to makeup and Holiday time is when the brands come out with their own makeup set. I have gotten some in the past and even purchased a few for myself this year and they are worth it. Some of the makeup sets that are big this year include Tarte’s Holiday sets which you can find at Ulta and Sephora depending on who has what, Kat Von D’s Saint & Sinner pallet which would be a big one to ask on any list, but if you want to go for drugstore E. L. F. has released a lot of sets from brushes to highlighters and even stocking stuffer gifts. If you want a better list of sets, I would suggest watching Kat and Hayleigh (sorry if I butchered the spelling) on Beauty News since they talk a lot about new releases even for holiday and Jen Luv’s Reviews for new holiday releases every week on What’s Up In MakeUp and I suggest joining the Facebook group since everyone helps in suggesting products so asking for what gift to ask for or get for someone special they are willing to help. Heck, they helped me with selfie advice.

When it comes to some sets I would suggest, I would suggest the Ulta sets in Be Gorgeous, Beauty Treasures, and Love MakeUp because not only you get a lot of makeup but it does come in nice cases that you can keep. If you have someone that loves jewelry boxes, I would suggest the Beauty Treasures because you can remove the face and eye pallets for convenience since they are not in the signature plastic casing like the Be Gorgeous one. Plus you can go through the drawers very easily for what you need for instance, one drawer is for the concealers and eye primers, another one is for the brow powders, gel liners, cream shadows, and eye topcoats, and the last drawer has the lip items, the brow mascara, and a blush brush and dual ended eye brush. You would pay a bit more for this and good thing is the eye pallet has a lot of warm and cool shades to play with. If you have someone that loves train cases more for convention travel or vacations, then the Be Gorgeous and Love MakeUp sets are for them. I just got the Love MakeUp on sale and these two sets do have your usual eye shadow pallet which the Be Gorgeous comes with 42 shades while Love Makeup comes with 36 and you can create a lot of looks with these and you do have your essentials like your bronzers, gel liners, brow powders, but interesting thing is that the Love MakeUp does not come with the primers. I would suggest using your usual eye primers with the Be Gorgeous and Beauty Treasures sets because I find the Ulta primers in these sets too drying. Also, with Love MakeUp you do get lip liners. I would say for either of these sets to see which one would be worth more to give and again to see if the person loves train cases or jewelry boxes. These sets do retail for $29 which is Beauty Treasures and $24 for the other two but they do have specials on the train case sets.

Nerd Memorabilia: Here at Nerdy Shique Universe, we do include nerds when it comes to giving gifts and many stores do carry a lot of merch based on Doctor Who, Harry Potter, even Dungeons & Dragons. Your best places to find these things are Barnes & Noble, especially the ones with music and movies being sold, Best Buy where they sell Marvel themed thumb drives and other pop culture related things mixed with tech, F. Y. E. for a lot of your merch and tees, Hot Topic being the biggest, and two more stores to mention that we do have here in Orlando and they are Pop Cult where there are way more pop culture items like Hello Kitty, Pokemon, and more, and Box Lunch which has more of the classic pop culture stuff like Miyazaki films and 90’s themed stuff. Gondras did get me a Gigi from Kiki’s Delivery Service as a coin bank last year for Christmas from Box Lunch by the way. Nice thing about that place, they do put your purchases in a lunchbox like carton since it does match the name. I know I will be hitting the Hot Topic website for Gondras this year! Lol

Bath & Body Sets: I know a lot of us love to pamper ourselves after a stressful week at work, heck even a stressful weekend at a convention, so having a a set of bath or skin care or body products to help soothe that aching foot or to calm the skin from stress is a way to go. Many brands have been coming out with sheet masks to help with the skin, even on a plane which I hear people use sheet masks to help with the dry air on a plane, and you know the holidays are HUGE for travel! You can get some of these sets from Sephora where they have skin care sets from Glam Glow, Tachia, Boshia, and much more. Emily Noelle even talked about some masks she got with holiday scents recently like pumpkin spice and sugar cookie and I think those are Ulta and you do have other brands at Ulta like Tony Moley, their in house brand of bath sets that you can get Buy One Get One 50% Off at the moment. I do hear the scents from Ulta do smell good. And of course, Bath & Body Works, my kryptonite with their Christmas scents! And of course, can’t forget Lush because they do have awesome gift sets with bath bombs, bubble bars, and they do come with mini shower gels in there too and good thing about getting these sets from Ulta, or Bath & Body Works, and Lush is that if the person never tried them before this is how you can try them. That is how I got into Lush by the way, Mommy Gondras did work for them seasonally back in 2007 and I got a gift box from their Christmas line and I was addicted, even to Snow Fairy. So, every year is Snow Fairy right after Christmas! So yes, sets are a good way to go!

Luxury Brand Sets: I can’t forget about this because there are times where we know someone that loves that luxury skin care brand or makeup brand and there are times where the singles are a bit pricey. A lot of the luxury brands do come out with their own holiday sets and if you have saved up a lot over time then getting a set like this would give the luxury lover a ton to try. One good set definitely to recommend are the mud mask sets from Glam Glow because you get to sample some of their more popular masks in one single set rather than trying to buy it for $50 (just guessing) and around this time there is the Sephora sale depending on your membership level you get 15% as a Bauty Insider and 20% for VIB and VIB Rouge which does help even when it comes to early gift shopping.

Train Cases: I feel like bringing these up as a possible gift item especially when I mentioned the Ulta sets before and that is train cases. If you don’t want to get the Ulta sets, there are the usual train cases that we love to travel with, heck I am going to be using my pink caboodle for Holiday Matsuri since that is what I use for my convention makeup stuff. These last you for a long time and they do come in many sizes and price ranges. I have a six tray one and it was $24 if I remembered and I got it from WalMart two years ago. Trust me, I have a lot of stuff to put in, lol! Anyways, besides WalMart selling these, you can find at Target, Ulta, and I believe Sephora too and of course Amazon and EBay does carry some of the older ones you may not be able to find in store anymore.

MakeUp Bags: Besides train cases, you can also get a loved one a makeup bag because a lot of us do travel and having that makeup bag is very handy! They come in all shapes and sizes and even in nerd memorabilia, heck I have a Pikachu and an Artemis one from Hot Topic since you know me, plus they do come as sets depending on the brand. For instance, Too Faced has a set where you get three mini shadow pallets, their Better Than Sex Mascara, and other items in a makeup bag. Even MAC has some such as their mini lip glass trio, which you can use the little makeup bag afterwards for lip stuff, bobby pins, and other things when you are on the go. Also, Sephora has really big ones every holiday and they come oujt with new designs for every holiday so you can get what you like. And in case if you are at a department store browsing makeup counters, some of the brands do include makeup bags as gifts with purchase, I do admit I take my mom’s Lancome ones due to how spatious they are. Lol! Speaking of gift sets…

Perfume and Cologne Sets: Besides beauty and clothing, there are the loved ones that love to smell good! I usually ask for perfume but due to how many bottles I have I have slowed down incredibly! Anyways, sets are a good thing to go with because there are times when a brand wants to treat the customer or their loved ones by selling the set together and they do come with pretty sweet stuff like a shower gel and lotion and sometimes even a bag to go with. For instance, my Nicole Richey perfume set came with a carrying bag. A good set that people suggest is the one from Sephora because they include a coupon to get the full-size perfume or cologne that is included in the set of minis of your choice.

Gift Cards: If you have a hard time choosing what you want to get someone, gift cards are a way to go! In my gift advice, I say pay attention to where your loved ones shop or ask where they like to go. If you can’t get an answer, you can get them a Visa gift card so they can spend it anywhere. Another good idea is if the person loves to play games on their devices or game systems, you can get them either a Google Play card, an ITunes card, or even the systems’ cards to use in their stores such as the PSN card in case if they want to get a classic game or pay for their membership at the end of the month.

Food Sets: Finally, there are times when we want to give a person a little something extra especially in their stocking and that is either something sweet like candy or a box of cocoa packets. Heck, my mom gave me a can of blueberry tea bags one year as her stocking stuffer gift because I love blueberries especially as a tea. Not only that, if you have a party to go to or your friend loves savory foods, Hickory Farms always, always, ALWAYS have stands every year! If you have not tried Hickory Farms, I suggest trying their turkey summer sausage. Anyways, this place is a good idea for any party platter or as a gift even the day after Christmas has a good sale with them which is buy one get one 50% off and that includes their food sets that come with pretty good mustard spreads to tell you the truth.

Etsy: Finally! Finally! If Didn’t mention this earlier, Etsy is also a good place for gifts! This has a lot of craft items made by people, think of it a craft version of EBay. Not only that, this is where most of the people I meet at Artists Alley sell here as well such as Black Flame Creations, Aunt Matilda’s, and a bunch more. You can find a lot of great jewelry, some people even sell kitchen items, even candles if you can’t walk into a Yankee Candle. Plus, a lot of stuff is really well priced and they do ship as soon as possible even in time for holiday time! For instance, I got Vivi a wolf necklace for her since I was her Secret Santa last year and I did remember how she loved wolves and found it when looking for steam punk jewelry and it did arrive on time. So, I would say look around Etsy and also sign up for their newsletters because they will give you some items as ideas and some of the stuff does get discounted depending on the seller.

That is it for this post! Hoping you got some inspiration from this post! Christmas is my fave time of year not only just for gifts and sales but also Holiday Matsuri and the Doctor Who special that comes around every year. So, good luck on your gift hunt! What is next? A new cosmetic controversy that may want you to think carefully of swatching a tester on yourself! Until next time!

Beauty: Best Liquid Lipsticks for Conventions!

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! Since Holiday Matsuri is coming up in less than two months, I feel like doing an awesome beauty post!

Best Liquid Lipsticks for Conventions!

As makeup wearers in the convention community, there are times where we have a hard time finding that moment to re-apply our lipstick even with panels where can’t get that time to re-apply if we are hosting or late to show up after sleeping in from a long night of partying and panels! So, with MegaCon, I noticed that wearing a liquid lipstick is a lot better because they stay on for a very long time and a lot of cpmpanies in both high end and drugstore have been getting on the liquid lipstick train both in matte and mettllics, especially in time for the holidays! Since I wore a liquid ipstick, why not do a post of the best brands for anyone who needs an awesome lip and being comfortable too!

First, a Lip Primer Recommendation: I know a lot of people do have the problems of their liquid lipstick running all over their lips like I had with the Colour Pop ones and all thanks to Andrea Matalano, she says that the E. L. F. Lip Primer and Plumper is the way to go! I never heard about a lip primer until she mentioned it in her video and I do have the E. L. F. one and waiting for two more to appear on my doorstep with other items from Ulta, but other brands do have their own lip primers which NYX makes one too if you don’t want to get the E. L. F. one. People did complain about the E. L. F. one that the plumping side does sting which I did cecounter that before which my lips did get used to it. You essentially put on the primer side first and then the plumper side which you can smell very easily or you can put the plumper on top of the lipstick for added plumping. Does it work? Yes it does! It kept on all of my liquid lipsticks on and they stay pretty well too. I suggest getting a lip primer because it will save the bleeding and it is easy to carry as well.

Now for the lipsticks:

Disclaimer: These products are based on the love from the lead writer so please respect her choices!

1. Ofra Liquid Lipsticks: First off is the Ofra Liquid Lipsticks! I love these especially with the smell. They glide on very smoothly and when dried down they stay put! I only re-apply one or two times because of how well they stay and even with the lip primer they do stay on a lot better. These retail for $17.50 each and you have a wide range of colors from nude to bolds and even metallics. You can get Ofra through Ulta on their website and I would say it is a good thing since you can get points from buying these!
2. Colour Pop Matte Lipsticks: Before the lip primer, I hated how these ran all over my lips but with a lip primer these do stay put! These are very affordable and you can get a lot of colors as well. They around the $6 range and they do take a week to come in. Good news that select colors will be carried at Sephora which would be in time for December.
3. Black Moon Cosmetics: I tried this out all thanks to Vivi getting me an early birthday gift, a very early one, and that is a liquid lipstick from Black Moon Cosmetics in Eternal. I wore this during MegaCon, well two days out of the four, and it did not budge at all, even when I asked people questions! I did have to put on once after eating my pb&j sandwich. Still, that thing stays very well even on top of lip primer. This company does a wide range of colors from matte to metallic and even bold if you want to do a goth cosplay. These are around $18 each!
4. Kt Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks: Next is up Kat Von D’s liquid lipstick range! I thank Vivi getting into this line too and I only have two in Echo, which is a navy blue, and Wolf, which is ddeep gunmetal. Even though these do stay put but they are pretty drying which I suggest using not only the lip primer but also a lip balm before the primer. I always use lip balms, especially my all time Holy Grail one and that is LipSmackers, and then do the primer afterwards and then the lipstick. A head’s up, for the color Witches from what I hear, best to use a black lip liner or eye liner to line the lips to make it more oopaque. Reason why I mention these besides the downside of the dryness and needing a liner for Witches is because there is a wide range of shades to choose from! Heck, one shade is a best seller that sells out and that is Lolita and Lolita 2! (there is even a blush…) You can either go nude or natural and classic red or even bold for certain cosplays. And again they do stay on even while eating. These are $21 from what I remembered buying Echo and Wolf and you can get these from Sephora and the Kat Von D Cosmetics website! If you need a gift suggestion, there is a set for holiday for friends!
5. Rimmel Provacalips: These liquid lipsticks are amazing! I tend to wear one with my cosplay and that is a very, vampy purple color. It is the RImmel Provacalips collection! It is a two in one where you have the lip color on one side and then the top coat to seal it in for the day. This does stay put all day and it doesn’t budge. If you saw my interview videos as my ice Trainer Cosplay my lip color was there every video! These around $6 or $7 depending where you go! I may have to try the only one I have which is a berry one on top of my primer because I had these before the primer came out.
6. NYX Lip Lingerie: This list wouldn’t exist without at least one NYX product and that is their Lip Lingerie liquid lipstick line! I have the colors in Corsette and Embellishment which are nude colors among them and they feel great! Yes, they might be drying but I do use my lip primer underneath and they aren’t as bad. They do stay pretty well on top of the primer too which I highly suggest to do that before using these. They are in the $7 range depending on where you are whether it is Target or Ulta or even if you have in town and that is a NYX store! We have one in Orlando at the Milennia mMall and the nice thing is if you guys have the NYX app or shop at the store and sign up for their MakeUp Crew membership you can get points. Goes the same with the NYX website. Giving you guys that tidbit in case if you didn’t know.
7. L’Oreal Infolluble Liquid Lipsticks: Now another drugstore choice and that is from L’Oreal! I heard about these all thanks to Casey Holmes and you know me and my kitty curiosity I had to try! I decided to get some on Ulta and got them in the colors Kitten Paw and Petal Potion and these are amazing! They are lightweight and they don’t budge! They do transfer before drying down matte but just stay on for 18 hours which it claims. I think I rarely had to re-apply and I think these would be perfect for a convention because of how comfortable they are and do dry into place. I can see why people bought out one color when I was buying two of them. These are $7 and change at WalMart and Target and $9.99 at Ulta.
8. Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Lipstick: Another liquid lipstick from Rimmel and that is their Stay Matte Liquid Lipstick formula which I just tried! I remembered seeing was it Vii Dreamcatcher reviewing these on her channel and at first she said they were patchy which made me a bit skeptical but all thanks to Shop Kick having it as a Kick Bait item I decided why not give it a try. There are times where makeup works for some people and other products don’t and these worked out a lot especially with the primer. I do have to double dip, as in put one coat then put another on both top and bottom lips and then do the tissue and it stays! IT STAYS! I only had to re-apply once and that is it! Great thing is that you not only get your usual pinks and nudes but you do get a vampy purple, a blue, a black, and if I remembered a grey as well so anyone who wants to go beyond your normal colors and try something bold then RImmel is your brand with this line. I have Blue Iris and Pink Blink which someone in a review said the Blue Iris was patchy. I did mention how the lip primer helps and it did help with the patchiness. These are in the $5 range and you can get them at Target, Ulta, and WalMart!
9. Wet N Wild Color Icon Liquid Cat Suit: The final liquid lipstick best for conventions is the Wet N Wild Ciquid Cat Suit! THESE ARE AMAZING! Wet N Wild first released these at the beginning of this year and when I heard about them I had to try them out. These stay put very well except Goth TOpic always ran all over but hoping it stays put on my lips with the primer. I do have Goth Topic, Rebel Rose which I finally found after two months of looking for it, Gimme Mocha, and all of the Midnight Mermaid ones which happens to be Sea Seduction, Coral Crown, and a red one and a green one. I will be having the green one on hand during Holiday Matsuri for a very festive look for Sunday in my own way. Plus, these are pretty lightweight on the lips which I feel like I am not wearing any liquid lipstick at all once it is set. These are very affordable in the $4 range. I did hear they released Halloween colors but I didn’t look at the moment. Sorry but if you have the Halloween ones, awesome! Still, a great item to get and you can get these at Walgreens, Ulta’s website, and Wet N Wild’s website. I think you can also get them at Walmart since they did carry the Fantasymakers stuff.
Well, that is it for this post! I would put a tenth one but at the moment I am waiting on the new Maybelline Matte Metallics one I picked on Ulta. I haven’t tried the nnw Liquid Suede metallics from NYX yet, it will be a bit for those. I will update on Twitter with the Maybelline one in how well that one goes! So in the meantime, I will be doing my September and October favorites in the next few days so stay tuned guys! Also, donate to our Patreon and Go Fund Me!

Tips: How Not to Be a Wheeaboo!

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! Today, I am making a much lighthearted post this time. It deals with Wheeaboos.

I bet you are wonder, “What the heck is a wheeaboo? Why are you doing this post?” or “Not this again!” Well, the reason why I am doing this post is that it seems like some people are kind of including the usual anime fan in the wheeaboo category and it is kind of sad. For those of you who don’t know what a wheeaboo is it’s a person who is over obsessed with anime and/or denounce their culture wherever they are or what they were born as to say that they are Japanese and perceive what they see in most anime as actual Japan. Also, they tend to butcher Japanese especially mixing it in with normal speak like the pronoun “desu” or use the expression “ne.”

I do have to confess that I used to have these kinds of tendencies when I was with THEE X (I use this name towards him since he is the only ex-boyfriend I really only had and I named him this in the first book too.) It was all because he and his family lived in Japan due to his dad being in the military and was happy about that but things did get a bit rocky during our second year together especially when he got mad at me when I said I prefer the American version of Power Rangers over Super Sentai since I couldn’t get into it when he gave me episodes of Dekaranger which turned into SPD when it came to the states and I did see it when it got brought over and it was awesome and better than the Japanese version, heck Doggy Cruger was even better in the American version. Besides the point, I did grow out of it and did change while dating and being engaged to Gondras.

Lately with watching people’s stories with their encounters with Wheeaboos, I never thought that there were more out there and that people have met them or were friends with some of them and after watching a video that Ahki Deareest and Gaijin Gumba did together and talking about how anime fans are being looped into this group, this made me think and this post is a way of how to not only tell the signs but how to get out of it before it is too late! Heck, would help with the people you know who became one, especially the young ones who got into anime!

1. Learn the culture: First tip is of course learn the culture! What you see in anime is not always what it is in real life, yes there is historical fiction anime such as Rurouni Kenshin which is based on an actual samurai but anime like Naruto, Bleach, even manga like Chronicle of the Cursed Sword, do show some cultural aspects but understanding the actual history, the folklore, and the influences from other countries would help know the culture. Here is an interesting fact about anime that WHeeaboos hardly know and that is America actually influenced the Japanese in creating anime with how they drew their cartoon characters like Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, etc. That is how come you see how much anime and manga is drawn by looking at them to get the idea of anatomy in characters and how to make them move, etc. Not only that, knowing the folklore with Japan is also important because when you visit the temples they do have statues that link to that folklore as well. I bet you’re wondering who you should watch on YouTube for more stuff on Japan’s history and culture? I would suggest CanadaJin3 who is a Canadian woman who lives in Japan and she goes to the many locations to talk about the history, especially with temples, the many hot springs in case if you want to visit them, and how to take the trains to the places, and etc. Also Charla In Japan is another person that does go around Japan even in Tokyo to different temples during holidays or just tourist attractions to show on YouTUbe. I also recommend an Asian Humanities course to help know the different parts of Asia before Japan since they also helped Japan in some of the language and food! Speaking of which…
2. There is More to Japanese food than ramen and Pocky: What do I mean by this? Well, I did use to eat nothing but ramen and Pocky when I was younger to fill my Japanese food need but when I met Gondras I was introduced to more of the cuisine. As in, I got to try other things outside of ramen since we had Japanese places that are amazing! If you are here in Orlando around November there is a Japanese festival and one place that does serve food for you to purchase is Ahki which is located near the Wyndham here in town, that was where we first celebrated our first anniversary together and I still remembered having Katsudon which is a rice dish with scrambled eggs, a kind of sauce, onions, and normally pork but they have other versions like Tendon which is Tempura veggies and shrimp which I had once and enjoyed but one thing I do love now is Udan noodles! And towards Pocky, there is other snacks to enjoy that is not just Pocky such as mocha which is a marshmallow like snack that is made when rice is mashed up and rolled over until its sticky and it is mostly found as ice cream which tastes amazing! There is also red bean cakes, buns, and stuff made with geen tea and taro, which is a sweet potato found in sweets. And of course, our beloved Hi Chew which is almost like taffy in a way. A good example of finding a lot of snacks besides the usual Pocky is either in Asian markets in your town or at the Japanese Pavilion in Epcot at Disney World.
3. Learn the language: This is one important tip to know and kind of obvious and that is learning the language. Yes, we know the simple words from anime but some people don’t use it in the right context of a sentence. I have seen it a lot in fan fiction and I can’t read it because of that since I did take Japanese classes in college. One big thing about a language is of course sentence forming and that was hard at some points and I did pass with B minuses but the language is complicated to learn like most languages. I do suggest taking a course if you are at a university or go the Rosetta Stone route. In case if you are wondering, “ne” is a way of agreement in sentences if you hear someone using it in English, it is the Japanese saying, “Right” at the end and goes the same with “desuyo” and “desu” is a form of “I am” which is normally at the end of sentences. (Was pointing back to earlier since those two words are the most used by a Wheeaboo along with kawaii and sugoi.)
4. When visiting Japan, know the customs of the country: This is a major tip because there are things different that people do in public in Japan versus how we do it here! I did see this one Wheeaboo story where someone went to Japan with an actual Wheeb and she was loud in temples, the subway, and was cosplaying while visiting which is frowned upon unless if you are going to an event or if it is Halloween. Some of these customs would include bowing, certain table manners like wait until the entire group gets their drinks before taking your first drink and even slurping your noodles loudly. (That is okay actually, I did hear it is a compliment to the chef.) Also, another interesting fact is that we as tourists do stick out like a sore thumb and I can imagine with a Wheeb it would be even more since Japan is always more about the group when we are more about the individual so I would read up on some customs before traveling and try to get your Wheeaboo buddy to read as well since they can get some dirty looks.
5. SHOWER! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! SHOWER! Yes, I put this in caps because in some of the Wheeaboo stories I have seen, especially with Vivid Barnacle, wheeaboos like most convention goers don’t shower either! One story that dealt with a group of university students met one really annoying one that turned extra crazy smelled like sweat and only went to brush her teeth in the communal shower rooms. I admit I smelled worse and had to spray the elevator with room refreshner spray when the stench of one student in Daytona was left behind. (Not kidding!) As we all know that showering is a major part of any routine especially while working at a convention or a normal 9 to 5 job. Heck, even deodorant and perfume is also important to keep that stench away. You shouldn’t be smelling like convention funk on a normal day since hygiene is very important.
6. We tend to use the same school supplies as Japan even if it has some cute stuff! I have to mention this one since one video had one story where someone meant a Wheeaboo that had a backpack with school supplies from Japan and was like, “Oh look! This is my Japanese eraser!” I know it’s nice to get school supplies even if it is Hello Kitty school supplies like I have before one of the Sanrio stores closed down in town and an art store stopped carrying it but there are times when a Wheeaboo just collected it and says it is better or gets it because it is Japanese. For instance MagicalPockyUsagi was trying to sell “Japanese pens” for thousands of dollars. Why the quotes is that people who commented on her video said they can get the same kind of pens at WalMart. I kind of agree because some of the pens I got came from Dollar Tree and when I used to draw, back to the eraser bit, I found a lot of my erasers at art stores and in WalMart and Kmart when we had it at the time. So in other words, we do use the same kind of school supplies that Japanese students use even if they have cute stuff on them. Heck, I even tend to use my Kerroppi and Kuromi pencil cases as makeup bags time to time to make it easier for storage or travel with my makeup.
7. Getting into other fandoms doesn’t hurt! What I mean by this is that a great way of breaking the Wheeaboo tendencies is that there are other things to enjoy besides anime and JRPGs. I will tell you other stuff I do like and that includes Doctor Who, Mystery Science Theater, Marvel, and of course since I am going into the career field of it, access technology. Heck, besides my Fiary Tail wallscrolls, I do have a Doctor Who print on my wall of one of Matt Smith’s quotes since I am a writer myself and it deals with stories. I think Clara did recite it in the last episode of Season 9 when Capaldi was talking about her. And can’t forget, I do love beauty stuff which it doesn’t hurt to like many other things outside of anime whether it is tv, film, books, etc. It kind of gives you more of a healthy balance in life to like other things and opens your mind to other things that might be out there.I admit I didn’t like the idea of podcasts at first but when I got my Victor Reader Stream I have over twenty of them I have subscribed to and let you explore and think when listening to them. Again, liking other things outside of anime and Japan doesn’t hurt, just give it a try.
8. Finally, listen to more music! A lot of Wheeaboos like to listen to a lot of anime music and Japanese artists. I did admit I went through this phase and had tons of CDs burned with the same song or two and listened to it in the car a lot! Then when I got my MP3 player, it was the same way, then IPod…now IPhone but I do have my fave artists from here in the states this time around and goes the same way as my I Heart Radio lists and my Top Ten songs! I am admitting that I have grown out that stage of life. My music taste does still have Gackt, L’arc~en~Ciel but I do love Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Hawthorne Heights, Sleeping with Sirens, sometimes I do listen to Barenaked Ladies, They Might Be Giants, and more! And of course, local bands from here in Florida do rock as well like Leaving Haven, Mr. Bella, and my boys of Soul Switch and Traverser. Like the last tip, listening to other artists new and old doesn’t hurt either since listening to the same thing over and over can be a bit boring at times and having something new to listen to can give a nice bit of variety.

Well, I think that is about it! If you guys want to hear some of the stories I mentioned above, I would suggest Mindless Gonzo for his Wheeaboo Horror Stories and Vivid Barnacle since people like to submit their own stories. If you have a tendency to go WHeeaboo, I would say blast some Avenged Sevenfold before you get trapped in it since it may help!

Well, that is it for this post! I would like to announce that I did submit a new panel for Holiday Matsuri. They haven’t announced press yet since I was glad they got my form a while back when they put up the form (gotta love it when they are early) and they did put up their panel form at the beginning of this month if you are wondering. It was an idea from Nerdy Shirts since I did mention my convention experiences in my first book why not talk about how I went from being an attendee to press and then an author? So, hoping this will be selected for this year but if not, there is always Omni after all! So, next post will be the Top Ten Songs of June and my faves of May and June! Until next time!
