The Review Quadrant: The Volcano: Rescue from Wikari Documentary

Hello to all of you beautiful nerds and welcome back from traveling the vast nerd universe! I am back with another review!

The Volcano: Rescue From Wikari Review

I normally don’t review documentaries, I almost reviewed the Woodstock one from this year but this one is a good change, but first!

Disclaimer

This review is based on thoughts and opinions of the lead writer of this blog. Please respect her thoughts and opinions since this is her first documentary review!

Topic of Documentary

This documentary tells what happened on December 9, 2019 when a group of tourists toured the island known as Wikari or White Island located in the Bay of Plenty close to New Zealand. This tour was a part of a cruise that was through Royal Caribbean but what people were not expecting is surviving an eruption that took place on that day. This documentary is told by survivors including Linda and Brian Yuri, who were on their honeymoon during the cruise, Jesse Langford who lost his sister and parents, and first hand accounts of the rescue crews that have saved the ones who are alive to this day.

Thoughts

I was surprised that I found a trailer for this earlier today at work when I was trying to see about volcano movies I haven’t seen yet and that NetFlix had done the documentary. I have enjoyed a few documentaries by them, which included Train Wrecked: Woodstock 99. I almost reviewed it since I remembered that event and Peter Monne talked about it but it was hard to write it. I think this would be easier because it is a subject I enjoy.

For a few years, I enjoy disasters that have taken place in history from Chernobyl in Ukraine to the Station NightClub fire in West Rowryk, Rhode Island, this disaster has been one of my other favorites because of what people have endured at that time and never thought I would see and learn. While teaching remotely and being at U. Mass, I decided to watch some volcano documentaries one day during a cool down period and saw something called “Trapped in the Volcano” and watched it. It was about the White Island eruption and how people were trapped inside of it. I did watch the 60 Seconds Australia special which showed the Yuris talk about how they went to the island on their cruise ship, Ovation of the Seas, with other families who were on the ship enjoying their Christmas vacation on top of it. The White Island tour was part of the excursion list and people signed up for it. If you haven’t been on a cruise, which I had in 2007, part of visiting different locations you could pay for going off on adventures. I remembered sailing on Carnival and went to the Mayan Ruins of Belize where my dad and I wanted to see the ruins at some point. I do admit I did have a major bout of acrophobia during this trip since it was on a mountain and had to climb old temples but I did get to learn about the Mayans we never learned in school and it was a good break from shopping which we had done for the most part. My mom did blame my blindness but I blamed my fear of heights really and my dad did notice it. Anyways, at least I didn’t get hurt on our trip because at least Carnival did look out for people but Royal Caribbean hadn’t because White Island was an active volcano with acid lakes, mud eruptions, and steam eruptions. I would say watch the stuff on YouTube which does give you an idea of what White Island is like, I even recommend Illuminati’s episode on it for her Wild Wild World segment which I wish she kept doing.

This documentary was very interesting but I wished it would have done a little bit more since there was one survivor they didn’t feature and that was Stephanie Bower. You can watch her bits in the Trapped in the Volcano documentary, the 60 Minutes Australia special, and Mile Higher’s podcast episode on it. I did like to see what had happened with Jesse Langford, the Yuris, and Kelsey Waghorn who also survived the eruption. I did get to see this with audio description and getting to hear their accounts of what had happened to them was great because the stuff on YouTube was kind of brief with these people due to the spotlight on Stephanie and her recovery. I would love to hear more about what she went through in the eruption, again you can see her on YouTube and Tic Toc.

I did wish that this documentary could have been more than one episode, I could have enjoyed a two parter because there felt like there was more to it that can be told, especially more with the helicopter crew that rescued Stephanie and most of the other people who survived or died. What was not told, which you can find on YouTube is that most of the bodies that were left had two people wash away and I think the second episode could have expand on that especially with how rescue crews went back a few days later to get those bodies, especially one of the tour guides and Jesse’s sister, Wynnona, which we get to learn a little bit about them that they were very adventurous. I can see where we got Jesse and his family going to this island in the first place. I would also love to learn about what changed the geography of the island, as in is there still steam even though some of the audio description did mention some present day shots but not what the volcano looks like since it was a StratoVolcano, which is a cone shaped volcano coming out f the water. If you want an example, Yellowstone’s volcano is an example of this type and predictions are pointing to an eruption soon.

There was one thing that YouTube did mention and thought the NetFlix documentary should have mentioned in a second episode is that Royal Caribbean had a suit against the survivors. Mile Higher kind of went into detail with their episode where Royal Caribbean is suing the survivors which is not their fault. Yes, they signed up for an adventure but were not told that an eruption would happen that day. Remembering from what I’ve seen on YouTube, there were threats and the level was measured from one through three and apparently the island was at Level 2 due to an eruption that took place one night in 2016. At least no one was on the island. Stephanie and her family were told about this and this caused some nervousness and I can see why, if I was on that island, I would tell my dad, “I want to go back to the ship! I am not staying here!”Especially learning about how bad volcano burns are! Yes, they are not like the basic burns you could get from cooking, they are more extensive and can cause more long-term injury, scarring, and surgeries to repair the damage. Stephanie even ended back on 60 Minutes to take off her compression mask that helped heal her face burns. The Yuris did talk about their injuries in the NetFlix documentary which after watching the stuff on YouTube, I wondered how they were doing and hearing that they still have extensive burns is a major ouch, especially Brian with his ring finger on the dominant hand not working. THey showed him building a small cabinet and Laura talking about her burns on her neck and face, but what was interesting was that one part of Brian’s writ was not burned due to Laura holding it during the time of the eruption so she could hold onto him.

Rating: 3 Star Pawprint Comets Out of 5

At first I was going to give it a four but after remembering what I’ve seen on YouTube, I felt that YouTube had the better material, especially with 60 Minutes, Illuminati, and Mile Higher doing more detailed episodes on this disaster. I did like the bits that we did get to have more volcano footage because of how people used their cellphones to record this. Heck, Stephanie’s sister, Crystal, had some of the first count of the eruption because when she, Paul, and Stephanie reached the crater they had a photo in front of the black smoke that was coming out. That should have been a point to have Stephanie on this because of them getting that close along with Jesse, Brian, Laura, and Kelsey. It did help getting Kelsey to tell her part since she did yell at people to run in her group. But this documentary could have been better by adding another episode to tell more about what took place with the rescue and talking more about why crews had to hold back from going to be part of the rescue on the island, which Laura did tell 60 Minutes Australia that she was angry that they were held back and that more people could have been saved. While that is true, more people could be alive, even the Langfords and Rowerts could have survived. Plus, I felt as though YouTube had the better versions of the documentary but I can see why NetFlix had done this since the third year anniversary of this disaster did pass. You wouldn’t believe that this only happened three years ago when The Station NightClub fire happened in 2003 and Chernobyl in 1986. I think this was a good way of showing as a short piece and then let people dig deeper into the full story, which if I taught a class on historical disasters, I would show this documentary alongside Trapped in the Volcano and then used Mile Higher and Illuminati as additional resources in my class due to this documentary showing the detailed parts of the eruption and then seeing how people got trapped and the online module having an assignment with Mile Higher and Illuminati. THat is how I would teach that module.

Well, that is it for this review, I had more thoughts but it would probably take me a lot more to write into the morning but this was an okay documentary. I did enjoy Train Wrecked more though, just saying! I am still reading the final book of the Playful Brides series and will have the Bests & Worsts of 2022 sometime this weekend. So stay tuned!

Convention Quadrant: RangerStop & Pop 2021 Press Room Sessions

Hello to all of you beautiful nerds and welcome back from traveling the vast nerd universe! I am back with the last convention post of 2021!

RangerStop & Pop 2021 Press Room Sessions

So, remember how I mentioned the press room? Well, here we are since I got those videos up. Before the convention, I asked about interviews since during the Orlando side of things we were able to have interviews one on one on Sunday but this was different in Atlanta. They had a room for press to go in and talk with guests and this was pretty nice even though I was not there for Saturday. RJ was and it was good to split up for a day to cover more ground and had me at panels and him in the press room and it worked out pretty even with us sometimes needing to head back to the room for rest. I hope we see this at Orlando since we are planning to go to that one next year and I will explain further down in the post part.

So, Saturday’s room sessions include Austin St. John, the Time Force cast, the Beast Morphers cast, and Kat, Nekia, and Karen in a session. RJ did catch up with me over the phone at some point to tell me that with the Time Force one they only had Deborah which you will see from that title. They tried finding the guys, as in Kevin, Mike, and Jason but they were doing their own thing I believe. I know with Jason he was doing signings most of the time, I caught him during the evening signing which I was really lucky to be one of the last people for that. I think RJ had one more video but it was not recorded, only a few seconds. Wait, I missed one, also David Yaust. So, anyways, please enjoy these videos that I am about to link!

Now it’s time to have a bit of a talk. So, at the end of October, I also mentioned in my NFB Convention Tour that I have been accepted to George Mason University. I had to withdraw from the U. Mass Boston due to my grades and also I was seen for something that I wasn’t expecting and that was my reading comprehension was not great according to the professors that taught the courses I was in during the spring. I felt that after taking some time to recover mentally since it hit me really hard, I felt that U. Mass was not a fit for me since I also not only had to do Assistive Technology courses but also VIsual Studies and I came up that Visual Studies is not my forte. I prefer sticking with the technology courses and I found that in George Mason’s program and took the time not only to apply but also to go to Atlanta of course to recuperate and do what I’ve loved with Nerdy Shique Universe and of course go to see New Found Glory since they were touring and they have been my favorite band since after I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa. So, with 2022, we are going to aim for RangerStop Orlando in November so I can take the first part of the year to re-build my savings since traveling is not cheap especially with flying and learned that I should have looked for a better deal with Delta Airlines, also to give myself time to focus on my studies. I will also try for the NFB National Scholarship and the State Scholarship for Florida since that could help with funds too. As you know, Nerdy Shique Universe was part of my technology journey since it does show that I can create a blog with using a screen reader and of course making things more accessible for anyone else who comes to these posts can navigate link by link and heading by heading to enjoy what I bring. Now, I am also helping with passing that info along to conventions who don’t have accessible websites and that’s a problem. I will still work on Nerdy Shique Universe since I have reviews and makeup subscriptions to talk about here so don’t worry, I am not leaving the Blogging Quadrant just yet. I will be here! Just understand I may be tied up with school assignments since I am really excited and never gave up on my passion in assistive tech. So, 2022 is looking bright!

So, that completes this post. Again, I would love to thank the RangerStop & Pop staff for having us cover their event. Atlanta has spoiled us and we want to come back most definitely since we found a great Japanese place to eat at and great donuts. I hope we could cover this convention again in the future since it was a nice change to the usual Orlando conventions we’ve covered for years. Again, we are aiming for RangerStop Orlando for another year since we also booked our room since understanding as a convention goer and press team person, hotel rooms can sell out and best to book ahead of time. I hear that Holiday Matsuri just had their Thursday block sell out. Tangents aside, that is it! Again, happy to cover this convention and looking forward to 2022 and my future at George Mason! Waiting on my subscriptions and hoping to do reviews since I am still reading some books and hoping to start watching a live-action series, won’t reveal it as of yet. Stay tuned guys!

The Convention Quadrant: Mighty Morphen Panel from RangerStop 7!

Hello to all of my beautiful nerds and welcome back from traveling the vast universe! I hope you all are safe. I have been suffering from major allergies since yesterday and my ears have been stuffy so I’m trying to get better. Anyways, now onto the post!

Mighty Morphen Panel from RangerStop 7!

Now it’s the final panel video and it was worth the wait and it’s the Mighty Morphen Panel from last year’s RangerStop.

I remembered being seven years old and watching Saturday morning cartoons and once those were finished on Fox I see a witch come out a dumpster and doing it to a metal riff doing her signature, “At last after 10,000 years I’m free! It’s time to conquer Earth!” Then talking head goes, “Alpha! Call on five teenagers with attitude!” At that age you see this and my thoughts are, “This is so cool!” And I was hooked like many kids at that age in the early 90’s and loved every minute of it. This panel did and the entire convention did bring those memories back to me because of remembering all the times I watched Power Rangers and how even girls can kick butt like the guys was amazing. Heck, I did enjoy all the episodes with Lord Zedd since he was awesome. Besides the nostalgia for this series, it was great to hear the cast talking about their memories of being on the set, their favorite episodes, and how fun they had getting to be heroes on a kids show. Gondras did get to go up and ask our holiday memory question since it was close to the holidays after all and you will get to hear the answers since I did record that bit on my phone, sorry for having it so low. Don’t worry for RangerStop 8 and hoping if we get up to Atlanta for the new RangerStop Pop Convention in Atlanta we will have our brand spanking new video camera and tripod! So enjoy the video!

Well guys that is it for this post and all of our RangerStop 7 footage! I loved every minute of being at the convention and it was great to meet the people who made the casts for each seasons so great and hear their stories. Hoping that we get to go to Atlanta next year since now the new dates are in March for that one and it is the twentieth anniversary for Time Force! Yes, it is my all-time favorite season, can’t help it! And also hoping to do this year’s Orlando Convention in November! I want to thank the RangerStop staff for putting on a great convention and glad we got to cover it and hope we continue with it! Thank you from all of us at Nerdy Shique Universe!

The Convention Quadrant: Power Rangers In Space & Lost Galaxy Panel from RangerStop 7!

Hello to all of my beautiful nerds and welcome back from traveling the vast universe! I am back with another video!

Power Rangers In Space and Lost Galaxy Panel from RangerStop 7!

Continuing with the RangerStop panel videos for you all! This is the Power Rangers in Space and Lost Galaxy panel since these are two of my top favorite seasons in the entire run of Power Rangers. And yes it’s partly due to having space in their names! I did ask a question and that is to Christopher Kayman Lee and wishing Melody Perkins was also there to answer too because it would have been a fun answer from her and that is who would win a fight? Andros or Karone? Because it made sense since they both were rangers themselves even though Kerone became Lost Galaxy Pink the next season. I will ask her that if she does come back for another year if we do press again and I have met her and she is a complete sweetheart by the way. Christopher did answer my question so just enjoy what he has to say and I do have to say this panel did bring my love for both seasons back since In Space did end the Zordon era but it did bring new villains as time goes on and newer teams to take on that evil even with the start of Lost Galaxy and of course we had the man made Light Speed Rescue team. Anyways enjoy the video!

That is it for this post! I am going to try and post the rest of these videos in time for Omni Fandom Expo since we did have to get these edited and rendered for you all and this time we won’t rely on phones which did bring some delays on two videos so it’s all video cameras from here on out! And of course, make sure you listen for Nerdy Shique Transmissions this week because I will be doing an episode talking about my experiences at Omni over the years it has been a convention and of course I do recommend going! I am still waiting on my box subscriptions to arrive so stay tuned for everything! Oh right! Another RWBY review to come soon!

The Convention Comet: Omni Fandom Expo 2020 in Kissimmee, FL

Hello to all of my beautiful nerds and welcome back from traveling the vast universe! It’s time for the first convention of the year!

Omni Fandom Expo 2020
Dates: March 20-22, 2020
Location: Days by Celebration, Kissimmee, FL

Another year has started and you know what that means? Time for another convention season to start and our season starts with Omni Fandom Expo. As you all know we’ve been doing press for these guys since their first year in 2014 and glad to get another!

Location: Change of location this year and it will be at the Days by Wyndham Celebration located in Kissimmee. This hotel is located near Disney and of course a few miles away from Universal if you want to check out the main attractions. The features include free parking, express check out, free breakfast, a work out room, hot tub, and pool and even a restaurant known as Savannah Bar & Grill. The room rate here is $129 a night and I would say reserve as soon as possible because this discount ends on February 27th!

Guests: This year’s guests include Grey Delisle Griffin who is well known for her roles as Mandy from the Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Azula from Avatar: The Last Air Bender, and of course can’t forget Vicky from the Fairly Odd Parents! Returning to Orlando after years of not coming back is Neil Kaplan which makes me happy since it’s been years. You can hear him as Lord Zarkon in Voltron: Legendary Defender! And of course, returning again this year is Mr. Xemnes himself Paul St. Peter! And of course we can’t forget Speak Easy Sirens who has been a Burlesque troop that always been performing every year and bringing on Theoretical Rejects as another troop for this year’s event. And finally, one group that will be doing a performance this year is Shinobi School which is a performance troop from Tampa that specializes in park or, circus acrobatics, and so much more.

Events: One event I’m excited for is Miyazaki Madness which will be performed by Shinobi School and will be taking place that Saturday at noon during the convention. It will take our most beloved Miyazaki characters and have them do many feats and dance moves. If you want the more eighteen plus stuff, Speak Easy Sirens and Theoretical Rejects have Lore Olympus and NetFlix & Chill during that weekend. Please leave your kids at home since these two are eighteen and up only!

That is about it on this year’s event! Can’t wait to see you guys there! Hoping they add more guests in the meantime since we haven’t interviewed Grey yet and glad to see Neil back in Orlando since his last con was around 2009 I believe? So can’t wait to see what he has in store if we get that chance to interview him. And with Paul, we all know his events and can’t wait and see if Pirate Curses makes a return and if you want to learn voice acting I highly recommend his voice acting class panels. We will be buzzing around the convention floor this year and of course having new teammates! Let’s meet them shall we?

Damion Alexander Faelan and Michael Roach: Welcome our new teammates who will be joining us to do photography during the event. If you’re cosplaying, there will be photoshoots being held by these two and Damion does have his own photography business known as Shadow Rayne Photography which we will include a link down below.

And of course, we do have a new camera coming with us for floor interviews so a lot of new things will be with us so stay tuned. And of course, don’t forget our podcast Nerdy Shique Transmissions where I will also be talking about this convention in each episode leading up to the convention itself! Anyone on Breaker? I forgot that you can also listen to it on there too!

What is next? Our start of the RangerStop Panel videos since Damion was also helping us in getting those put together since they were recorded in separate parts. First of the panels is the Magical Source! Mystic Force! Panel! Stay tuned!

The Interview Quadrant: Wally Wingert At RangerStop 7

Hello to all of my beautiful nerds and welcome back from stuffing yourselves with turkey and all the fixings! I am back with another post!

Interview with Wally Wingert at RangerStop 7!

Alrighty then! So, starting the interview footage from RangerStop and man it was interview upon interview since Gondras talked to EVERYONE and handed our business cards and pamphlets out which also helped. We did get to do six interviews and did mention we do them over Skype in case no one is available or we can also catch them next year if we get the chance for press which I hope we do because this convention is a major blast to go to! Heck, I saw someone on the group earlier say they are going to Orlando next year from the UK! Oh yeah!

So, to start off with this year’s set up is Wally Wingert! Not only he played Psycho Blue on In Space but he has been in a ton of anime such as Tiger & Bunny as Kotetsu also known as Tiger and anyone who has been into Bleach! He Voice Renji! And to all of my Invader Zim fans he was also Tallest Red! I did get to ask him my favorite question which was the funniest thing happened in the booth which you get to watch because it was hard to think of other questions since I didn’t know what else to ask and it’s been months since we have interviewed a voice actor. Glad to talk to him and not only that got to cross his name off the Voice Actors to Interview List.

That is it for this one guys! Stay tuned for our next interview with another Psycho Ranger, Psycho Black played by Michael Mayes! And also follow our Twitter, @ Nerdy Shique, for all of the latest updates!

The Convention Quadrant: RangerStop 7 in Orlando, FL

Before this post begins I want to say that this post is dedicated to Robert Axelrod. He just passed away yesterday and I remembered meeting him at the very first Omni Fandom Expo. He did suffer from a big surgery a year ago and Barbara Goodson did raise money for treatment at last year’s RangerStop. I still remembered going to his Sunday panel at Omni where he talked about his role as Lord Zed in Mighty Morphen Power Rangers and his work on Digimon. Rest in peace Mr. Acxlrod you were a very talented voice actor who brought a lot of entertainment to kids as they grown up like I had when I first saw Zed on screen.

Hello to all of my beautiful nerds and welcome back from traveling the vast nerd universe! I am back with a new convention spotlight!

RangerStop 7 in Orlando, FL November 8th through the 10th, 2019!

It’s Morphen Time again with RangerStop 7! Yes, another year for Orlando’s Power Rangers convention. If you were in Atlanta you probably have went to the pop culture version of this convention and probably met other familiar faces besides our favorite Rangers. Let’s see what this year has in hold for the fans that are excited for the Orlando counterpart!

Hotel: This year the convention will be held at the Wyndham Orlando Resort which is in the heart of International Drive. Me and Gondras have stayed at this resort before the renovations have been done back in 2011 and 2012, we did go to AFO 2015 as attendees and seen the changes. There are more panel rooms added, ramps and stairways well small ones stair sets. If you have a wheelchair or a blind cane, watch your step as my tip. We will be staying at the hotel which the price for the discount is $109 a night. I would say book now because the rooms will go fast in time for the convention and if that happens you can stay at other places in the area, there is the La Quinta to let you know. Besides the hotel, you do have many attractions surrounding the hotel like the Orlando Eye for example, CityWalk down the road, even Universal alongside SeaWorld and their parks along with it. And for bites to eat, there are many restaurants you can go to like Red Robin for example or can order in if you wanted to if you have Uber Eats!

Tickets: There are so many tickets to choose from
You also get a 20% discount on some of them like the weekend pass with a shirt, the all weakened pass for example. One ticket I found interesting is of course the Family Plan where you can have two adults and up to five kids age’s four to twelve for $100 at the moment. For information on tickets, you can visit the link I will be providing down below!

Guests: This year there will be a lot of returning guests such as Kat Sutherland, Karen Ashley, Austin St. John, Christopher Kayman Lee, and a few new ones to add which one we are excited about! John Tui will be appearing at this year’s RangerStop for his first time. For anyone who has remembered the season SPD like we have he played Doggie Cruger in that season. Another interesting add on for any pop culture lovers and that is Samantha Newark who is known as Jerika and Jem from Jem & the Holograms! Make sure you follow RangerStop on their Facebook group because there are more guests to come. I am crossing my fingers on some and hoping to interview a few to add to our channel!

Well guys that is it for this spotlight. I know it’s short but there are new announcements to come for this convention. I do have to say is that this one is a huge blast to go to and worth the money since I did attend back in 2015. The guests are veryRangerStop Orlando Page nice and you get to hear their stories from being on the series or from their own convention experiences since they do appear at other conventions around the world. And of course with our second year of press we will be wearing the shirts and bringing the pamphlets along since we want to spread the word about our work so can’t wait for what this year brings.

What is next? Still waiting on my subscription boxes to come. I also am saying that I did join Dollar Shave Club well sued to hygiene issues…okay I was lazy in using RangerStop Tickets PageGondras’ razor from his box! Now I get one myself! It is worth it! Anyways, I am waiting on Glam Bag Plus and BoxyCharm at the moment since they got shipped out recently. So, until next time!

Also, check out the links to the tickets page and RangerStop Orlando!

The Interview Quadrant: Nobu & Sawa at Omni Fandom Expo 2019!

Hello to all of my beautiful nerds and welcome back from traveling the vast universe! I am back with another Omni video!

Interview with Nobu and Sawa at Omni Fandom Expo!

Yes! We got to interview Sawa and also Nobu at Omni Fandom Expo. Last year when Sawa first came to Omni I was hoping to interview her but her schedule got full and when we thought we had a chance another press team got that slot instead but never shown up. One rule about press is show up to all interviews when scheduled.

Anyways, when there was an announcement about her coming back closer to the con, I sent that email right away with our interview requests! Nobu was also added onto us at the convention since I think either Gondras asked or the radio station person who is their handler, from the Fan by the way, asked if he could join in. We said or they said, “Sure!” It’s been month’s guys and I was ill after the con so I forgot what took place. It was an honor though to interview them since they are the first Japanese guests we ever gotten an interview with. Yes, you read that right! These two are the first guests from Japan we ever interviewed! And of course, in case if you’re wondering during the video, Sawa did translate my questions and GOndras’ answers for Nobu so you get to hear that in case of questions. Plus, give this video some love by liking it since it has no views. I know it’s sad but hey now we can say we got to interview Japanese music guests even in our new pamphlets when we get those printed again.

Well, that is it for our Omni stuff. Normally we would have events recorded but first the Marvel Musical didn’t allow it and I mostly went to night time events that were 18+ and of course we did mostly Press Booth this year. There is always 2020 and of course aiming for another year at RangerStop! What is next? Another book review, my Favorites for May and June, and of course maybe a Fairy Tail review coming up whenever I finish the Eclipse Zodiac Arc. Until next time!

The Convention Qudrant: Holiday Matsuri 2018 Guests Q&A Panel!

Hello to all of my beautiful nerds and welcome back from traveling the vast universe! I am back with another Holiday Matsuri video!
2018!

Okay guys, the last video from last year’s Hol Mat is here.
Voice Actors Q&A Panel at Holiday Matsuri. Like the past few years we have done press, we have recorded another year. Well, more like Nerdy Shirts. SO, me and Gondras were on our way to this panel since he forgot the tripod in our room and as we got closer that was when my cane incident. Trust me, when we told him the news about what had happened he was surprised. I will talk about that later.

Anyways, this panel apparently while Nerdy Shirts was recording, Todd noticed him and asked about it which you will hear from that moment. We did make it for the end which was good and glad we did despite being late and my cane being broken which I will go tint next!

Like with the last post, this will also be the last Guests Q&A thing we will record because this is our last Holiday Matsuri we will be covering press for. I know we should come back for it as attendees but press has been a big thing for us for many years and still remembering doing it for MetroCon many years ago and we missed going to that one. We would go to it this year but this July will be getting my eyes checked so may stay in a hotel Friday night. Anyways, we have appreciated the work and we have done really great work and gotten awesome opportunities at Hol Mat during the years we have attended and covered even with how we interviewed Steve Blum which was amazing. What got us not to cover anymore is that last year’s press staff was disorganized. The past years before that as in 2015 through 2017 they were really organized as in making sure we have events to cover and also Google Hangouts to do with the teams, heck I did love 2017 Hangouts when there were more than one press teams in the chat! Having that time to meet was a good thing and gives us time to work together and say, “I will cover this event!” “We will cover this.” And so on, last year that didn’t happen. It felt like we were dismissed and it did take almost close to the convention for any word about us getting the passes when we did reserve our room. Vivi was mad that Tobi and him didn’t get any word about not getting approved either. I did get the message that they were overwhelmed with so many people signing up for it but smaller conventions have gotten a high demand, even Omni, on press and they were able to handle it by doing what they need to do and schedule what they can. Heck, even Barbara Goodson at last year’s RangerStop told me that she was already packed with interviews and understood. I think the high demand last year was due to the guests they were getting since we did tot that chance to interview Jennifer Hale which made me happy despite losing my cane, which I will get to next. So, in the end, I feel like the Press Staff could have handled it better last year and I know we have brought great publicity to the convention but seeing how disorganized it was who knows what would happen for this year and I am really grateful for what we have done and the opportunities presented to us. I hope you have enjoyed we have brought to you guys and this year we are hoping for RangerStop 7 since I had a blast and hoping Gondras will join me for it too since we have been Power Rangers fans for years!
And
Another reason is that my cane was broken at Holiday Matsuri and I never experienced that at bigger conventions. Plus, I felt like blindness is overlooked when becoming accessible. For one thing, last year, on the group I posted an idea where town criers would call out where certain events would be and where other rooms like Vendor’s Hall and Game Room, even someone came up with an idea of playing certain music to show the different areas are. I also liked that idea but it can be drowned out. What ticked me off though was a guy out of nowhere saying it was a completely bad idea because of people with sound sensory issues can have problems. I can see where he is coming from but the Manga Library was actually considered a quiet place and of course some panels are pretty quiet too. Not only that, I did reply to his comment saying, you know you can either be in a different spot or just wear ear buds, I mean Electric Daisy Carnival even sell them in their store on site for anyone who needs them and there is an electronics store in the World Center if need be. I did appreciate one staff member who was in charge of some of the set up for the convention did ask me to message her with my ideas and I did write my post about making conventions more accessible to the blind and sent that link and unfortunately no reply nor anything happened. I felt like it was not looked at. To me blindness does get overlooked and not considered as much nowadays, it was earlier when I did do the Blind Experience back in 2013 but now I feel like accessibility should not only consider the people with sound issues but also visual issues and what is interesting I found out I was not the only blind person going to this thing and it’s not easy when so many people are in one place and you need to get to somewhere and don’t have an idea of where you’re going. Not only that, there are times where people get distracted by their friends and what’s in front of them or even by the phone in hand which can cause an accident like my cane breaking, I am still sad about that, I think people should be more aware about that too. Not only that, not sitting in the middle of walkway either, saw that on the ramp in the hotel heading towards the rooms.

I think that is it guys! I know I rambled a bit but wanted you guys to understand what I have experienced and why we made our decision, on this. Not sure about attending as attendees since I felt like some of the stuff was a bit disorganized outside of Press. Even I heard the Christmas Tree Ornament thing didn’t happen. I know I always look forward to this convention every year with the Convention Spotlight but after last year it is now aborted for me in my mind. Hoping we do go back to MetroCon since I have missed that for many years and they were our first Press Experience so we will see for next year.

Well, that is it for the Hol Mat posts. So, what is next? Our interview with Tia Ballard from Omni Fandom Expo!

The Convention Quadrant: Holiday Matsuri 2018 Opening Ceremonies!

Hello to all of my beautiful nerds and welcome back from traveling the vast universe! I am back with a post that was supposed to be up a while back!

Holiday Matsuri 2018 Opening Ceremonies!

I know, why am I doing this close to the end of May? Well, life did get in the way! Ever since Gondras and I moved into our own place, took place during the Volcano Bay hang out when there should have been a Google Hangout for Press, things have happened since. As in me starting my job, getting unpacked, doing groceries, getting things for our living room and well during January the both of us got sick except me it was serious with a sinus infection! We weren’t able to upload the last two videos which one was the Opening Ceremonies. While doing groceries for the weekend on the day the convention started, Nerdy Shirts texted me about recording the Opening Ceremonies and said, “Yes but not the dancing parts!” The past years we did record them we got claimed for the music being in the shot. Anyone doing press at any convention, just record the important parts and not any performances because YouTube loves to claim everything for Copyright even if it’s overseas. Heck, I did warn the Press Staff at Matsuri about Idol Fest, this is one good reason for a Hangout to mention.

Anyways, hope you guys have enjoyed these videos. Sorry for the wait due to life getting in the way and this will be our last Opening Ceremonies at Holiday Matsuri we will ever record. I will explain in the next post which is the voice actor’s panel that Nerdy Shirts also recorded! Stay tuned!
